ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: NIKKI MISERY OF NEW YEARS DAY

NYD PHOENIX-3

New Years Day got their start in Anaheim Ca. going full throttle with what was the start of the social media trend of band promotion.
Seeming to take over and dominate MySpace, NYD built a strong army of dedicated followers with the release of their first EP "Razor."
With constant touring and self-promotion New Years Day began taking the music scene by storm peaking on the Billboard 200 charts at #45 with their third Album.
Some can say the success came when Ashley Costello and Nikki Misery started writing songs together and found their "sound."
We sat down with Nikki Misery fresh on the WARP Tour to pick his brain.

NYD 1

New Years Day seems like one of the hardest working bands around. You're either touring or recording, what do you like the best?

NM: personally, I love the touring aspect so much more. Nothing beats getting in a busted up van with these cats & going on  adventures around the world, making new friends, and then rocking their faces off.

You joined New Years Day in 2011 how did that come about?
NM: I actually met Ash at a goth club in Hollywood. We both were dragged there against our will and in protest she dressed in all white  and I dressed like a 70s nerd. And we became friends, watched each other's bands, and what they (NYD) were doing was EXACTLY  what I wanted to be doing. So when the opportunity came up, how could I say no?

What is your relationship like with the other members of the band?
NM: We are like a bunch of bratty brothers with a sister. We are a tight little family, we fight, we party, we rock, and most of all, we  have each other's backs.

Tell us what brought you to Schecter?
NM: We were recording an album at the time and had to go there to get our producers guitars set up. We came in and they treated us like family right off the bat. That and I'm a huge New Orleans Saints fan.

How has the relationship with Schecter grown?
NM: Schecter, the people that work there and the company itself, has become part of the family. They've become an extension of the band. It's so amazing to have a company that believes in you and supports what you're doing.

What are some tips for other musicians looking for endorsements and how they should approach them?
NM: Get noticed! Play shows! Tour! No one's booking you? put on your own shows! If punk rock can survive in back yards and still tour, you can do the same! Ask yourself, why should they endorse me? Be above the rest!

NYD6You've gone through Corsairs, Blackjacks and SLS's, what is your current weapon of choice?
NM: My weapon of choice, personally, is my Corsair! I love its vintage looks, versatility in tone, and it plays like a beast!
On tour with New Years Day, my favorite is the PT-7. It holds up beautifully against my violent playing style. It screams at the touch and purrrs when you need it to! Not to mention its dreamy body looks like it switches from green to blue to purple.

How does Schecter guitars shape your sound?
NM: I've never played such beautifully crafted guitars. If these guitars can last through me, they can last through anything. They hold up to our softest parts to our heaviest and have never let us down.

The NYD sound seems to get stronger each album what is the writing process and how has it changed over the years?
NM: we've just gotten more and more angry. Behind the scenes have been a bit of an emotional journey dealing with this business and the people that try to eat you up and spit you out. People who have no idea what we are like, trying to call us out. So we take all of that, and put it into a giant middle finger of sound.

Your style seems to fit many genres and you've played with many different bands from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus to CombiChrist, Otep, and The Birthday Massacre. Has being that versatile played in your success?
NM: Absolutely! To be honest, my favorite kind of tours are those where we don't fit in or where people might hate us. I wanna make every show like a fight. And it always starts with a laugh and then they're buying our cd. If you're not going to bridge out to new audiences, how are you going to get any further? Be influenced by these other bands, expand your craft and style.

NYD5

What is a typical NYD fan like?
NM: NYD fans are INSANE and I love it! They are dedicated, loud, out of control, and most of all FREE.

So your fans are truly dedicated?
NM: Absolutely! It's insane to look into a crowd and see so many half heads out there or kids in crazy make up!

What are some of your major influences?
NM: Anger, rebellion, every person who told me that I couldn't do it.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?
NM: If you're not feeling a little guilty then what's the pleasure (as he smirks and laughs) I'm sure I have more than a few.

What is the most important advice you can give an up and coming musician?
NM: Practice, practice, practice!!! Be social, make friends, be known, and get your name out there any way possible! They may hate  you, but at least they'll remember you.
